My name is Phillip Meece. I’m a 32 year old former combat medic.

I started as a sick kid. Hospitalized a couple of times for asthma, and I was on constant medication starting at 4 years old. I had severe allergies, severe acne, orthodontics for palate expansion, headgear to correct an underbite, cavities; I was pudgy and had glasses. I was a bit of a nerd super-stereotype. That finally started to change when I found Crossfit in 2008 and I was completely transformed. I went from a high carb video game player, to a paleo eating weightlifter. I converted my whole family. We ate paleo-ish, worked hard and had a lot of fun. My mom has her level 3 cert and is the head coach/owner at our family gym, aptly called Nearly Perfect Crossfit. She’s now competing in the Masters’ Crossfit open.

This is a great example of a Crossfitter at my parent’s box. Her name is Devon. She’s my niece, and she’s great at planks!

Oddly enough, HIIT seemed to make me no longer need any asthma medication. When I started, I could barely run 400m without needing an inhaler. After about 6 months I had stopped taking my daily meds and only the worst metcons even gave me a tingle of asthma. I woke up every day at 5am and trained like it was my job, but I needed something to pay the bills. I wanted a career that would allow me to continue my fitness journey. I had been a sick kid all my life and I desperately wanted to cling to my newfound drug-free existence. So I joined the Army as a medic. I loved being a medic; I loved the job, I loved the mission. My duty station was a little cold in Fairbanks, Alaska but I was determined to make the most of it.

When I deployed to Afghanistan 2011-2012 I started the deployment with a robust fitness plan in place. My starting weight was 180lb. My lifts were going up and we had access to a great gym every other week. On the other week we used a makeshift gym and got our lifts in that way. Though the name “Globo Gym” and its motto, “where we’re better than you and we know it” were pretty much a giant troll on the Crossfitters, I was extremely grateful to the creative carpenters who fashioned it, and shared the place with the rest of us. It was all in good fun.

Unfortunately we got traded to another battalion after the first three months. We spent the rest of the deployment moving from place to place and tearing down small combat outposts in Kandahar Province. We were constantly were without equipment, and I resorted to squatting my best friend Z and lifting blocks of concrete.

Overseas It was getting harder and harder to stay fit on MREs and crappy food, little sleep and constant movement. Some of us had a harder time than others maintaining our fitness overseas and I was one that gained 30lbs.

This is me at the end of the deployment. Noticeably heavier.

Some was muscle. Some was definitely not. I blamed poor food and my bad attitude for the problem and when I was given time off on our return from Afghanistan, I vowed to get myself back in gear because my symptoms of the long-gone asthma were returning.

However, I found that it was increasingly difficult after deployment to lose weight and keep it off. I was having energy problems, focus problems, and really strong bouts of anxiety. And I know what you’re thinking; maybe it’s PTSD! No, it wasn’t that kind of deployment. I did get my CMB (combat medical badge) but it was for a minor injury and none of my friends were hurt. I was not mentally traumatized. But I was sick. At the time I didn’t know with what.

So things continued as normal until I got a really cool job at the Brigade Surgeon Cell, basically I assisted in outpatient procedures every week and updated a tracker for following up with the status of the injured soldiers from our deployment. I learned a lot in this job, but I was having the hardest time focusing. I went to see behavioral health to find out if anything was wrong. They gave me a battery of tests and I scored above average in every category except one: focus/attention. I scored 30% in that test and was diagnosed with adult onset ADD. So I started taking Methylphenidate. Well, I was able to do my job, but my anxiety got worse….and the underlying condition seemed no closer to being handled. So it was now time for me to leave the Army and I was honorably discharged in 2014. I did my 4 years, now I was going to school. In the meantime I was health hacking. I was trying to get to the bottom of whatever it was that was wrong. I was starting to not be able to recover from workouts…a simple Workout of the Day would render me cripplingly sore for two weeks or more. I was just kind of stumped.

This is my best impression of a determined grimace. Do I look tough yet?

I hypothesized that perhaps it was the ADD meds that somehow were keeping me in a sympathetic nervous system dominance of sorts. So I discontinued the meds but the damage seemed to be done. In Afghanistan, I got up to 220 and I got back down to 185 after I left the service, but it was a flabby 185 if I’m honest. I was just inflamed and not the best version of myself when I came back. I was distracted, anxious, even without the meds now, and I was gaining weight. I tried pretty much everything I could think of. I spent the next 4 years studying health and building on the knowledge base of paleo and CrossFit which didn’t seem to be enough anymore.

I tried keto and the neurosis got worse, unbearable. I tried supplementing with powdered greens to get every kind of trace mineral and phytonutrient known to man. I supplemented iodine, 3 or 4 versions. I supplemented vitamin D, emulsified, bioavailable, etc., every permutation. I tried different amino acids, co-factors, fish oils, krill oils, algae oils. I learned that most of what I tried was oxidized so I tried again with different sourcing. I tried alkaline water and it was weird. I did lab work. I did a DUTCH test to see where my hormones were. Estrogen: Super High. Testosterone: Super High. What should I do about that? I don’t know. Probably take a giant box of more supplements. I took binders and detoxes and cleanses. I ordered crazy shit you can only get from Europe. I turned off my router at night and started using my phone on speaker phone in case it was frying my brain. I didn’t use a tinfoil hat but I came close…. I bought a fancy bed because it didn’t off-gas flame retardants. I bought a sauna, I did hair analysis, I bought another round of different forms of every supplement I tried before. I switched toothpaste, soap, and deodorant, anything I could think of. I bought a deep freezer and filled it full of local grass-fed, grass-finished beef I couldn’t afford. Some of the things I tried, I still use, but it was exhausting, and I wasn’t getting results.

Nothing really even touched the problem until I tried digestive enzymes. All of the sudden my cravings for alcohol went away. At this point, I was pretty bummed and I’d started drinking with little regard to my health, so this shift was kind of a big deal. I had been starting to give up. I had swelled up to 225, a new PR! But the enzymes were a little ray of hope. Masszymes was the brand, developed by a vegan no less; turns out he couldn’t digest a wet paper bag without the help of these superpowered enzymes. And don’t get me wrong, they work, but I question their necessity. I started getting my life together again. I was trying to lose the weight and I found this really interesting guy on YouTube named Jordan Peterson who said I might try pulling my head out of my ass and getting my life together. Well ok I said, I’ll give it a whirl. And so I did. I cleaned my room. I did laundry. I washed more than the minimum number of dishes to get by. I put my house back together and finished up a never-ending remodeling project. I started looking for something meaningful I could do with my life besides just keep burning up my GI Bill getting paid to go to classes.

Well here I was starting to get a hold of my life and look for a way to not be the biggest turd on the planet, and around that time we had a family reunion to see the solar eclipse. I realized, to my shame, that my cousin’s wife had been wasting away with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease for the last two years. The last I heard about it, someone else was trying to be a donor, so in my self absorbed pity party I had kind of forgotten about it.

So I was sitting across from her in front of my family’s pool and thinking, “she looks pretty sick still. I wonder whatever happened with the liver thing. Well, she’ll probably be annoyed that I’m asking her two years later. But oh, what the hell, the worst that could happen is that she’ll tell me to f*** off and let her die in peace.” So I ask. First off she’s not offended, I’m a total dweeb. Furthermore she said she’s blood type A+. I’m type A+. So we talked, she told me how the last two people including her daughter weren’t matches, because it turns out being a living organ donor is like winning the lottery. Most people die waiting for donors, she explains. And there are lots of things that can happen to make you lose your place in line. Her MELD score wasn’t high enough to get an emergency status so she was slowly dying in agony, vomiting blood, and experiencing all sorts of nightmarish symptoms. Seemed like she was in a real hell on earth. And a living donor was her best chance at life.

Well, I had been asking for more meaning in life; here was the opportunity. Time to take on a little responsibility and make the world a better place. So I said, let’s try and see if I’m a match. I figured I’m getting a hold of this digestion thing, I’m cutting back on booze, sorting myself out. I was looking for meaning and here was finally a chance to really save a life and feel like I earned my CMB. So I did it. I was a perfect match at literally everything. I was a first-time go at every station and from the August conversation I was green-lit by Christmas, in large part because she would certainly have died if we didn’t do it soon. I lost 20 lbs doing strict keto and going cold turkey with no alcohol at all. Because come on, I can’t pollute the thing if I’m giving part of it away. It went very smoothly. I was able to walk out of the hospital in 4 days. I felt a good deal better in a week. I felt normal in a month and in 2 months I felt as strong as I was before. Really not the big deal physically that I hyped it up to be. However emotionally and spiritually still deeply meaningful. Probably the proudest moment of my life.

Well, now I was healed up, but I was stuck at 200lbs and I wasn’t losing any more weight. The anxiety was coming back and being strict for this long without an excellent motivator was starting to wear on me. My wife and I were eating a giant box of fresh local vegetables every week as part of my recovery plan on keto. I couldn’t figure it out and these enzymes were $300/month. I had previously figured that the weight gain was due to alcohol, and I wasn’t terribly worried because beer drinking and having a beer gut seemed like a fair deal from the universe. However after 9 months alcohol-free, I was still experiencing digestive issues. Something was still not right even with the enzymatic support.

So I did microbiome testing. I found out I had dysbiosis and lots of different opportunistic pathogens! However this does not paint a very detailed picture, so I also did an RNA-based test which shows percentages of different bacteria’s RNA transcription, to determine relative activity. I saw that 58% of all activity was one microbe called Acinetobacter baumannii. So I Googled it. “Iraqibacter” is its nickname. It’s an antibiotic-resistant pathogen that is endemic to the desert that’s famous for killing wounded soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Crap. That doesn’t sound good. If it’s resistant to almost all forms of antibiotics how do you kill it? I found some seriously dangerous treatments but there was a common theme; I needed to get much worse before I qualified for these dangerous interventions. So double crap. I realized that one potential source of this problem might be our prophylactic for malaria; doxycycline. We were ordered to take a dose every day for the entire year long deployment. So having dysbiosis and an antibiotic-resistant infection kind of fit my story. But then the question was why did I seem to have health problems that other soldiers didn’t have? I realized later that most of my fellow soldiers were flushing their pills after the first week because it was making them feel sick taking them. Unfortunately, I was a boy scout and took them almost every day. In the Army’s defense, I did see malaria in the region, and it’s a real battlefield threat that has killed lots of soldiers throughout history. So I don’t blame the Army, even though it created difficulties for me personally.

So I started doing my research again. Ironically, the only folks who have experience with unknown crazy gut infections, biofilms, and detox protocols were vegans. (Another red flag along with the enzymes.) The vegan Youtubers led me to diatomaceous earth. I tried it. I had crazy reactions and it’s just silica, should be innate. Ok, I was onto something. I took that for a while, and tried coffee enemas trying to get whatever was in there out and killed. It worked, honestly. The vegan community was onto something with their infection mitigation and detox stuff. It begged the question though, why is this peculiar knowledge so prevalent and common among vegans and why is all this health hacking necessary if they’re eating so healthily? I came across turpentine and that’s when I saw some crazy stuff happen. Things started to die but I felt like I was dying too. I found Vegetable Police on YouTube – he has the most hilarious video about turpentine you will ever see. So we were looking at digestion as a potential primary cause of my symptoms.

Then I found Stan Efferding who says basically you can’t digest all those veggies. Like the giant box of organic co-op veggies I’ve been eating faithfully every week for 9 months and paying out the nose for? Those veggies? YEP……ugh. So I cut them out. I felt better. I dove deeper and before I could get any further down this weird cure of avoiding vegetables, I saw Jordan Peterson on the Joe Rogan show, talking about his daughter Mikhaila’s diet and the results he was getting. Sold, totally sold. That fit everything I’d been studying – it made sense with keto, digestion health, and a plan to starve out the infection. After starting on the carnivore diet, I began to feel the effects almost immediately. I lost another 20 pounds, my anxiety plummeted, my energy exploded, my mood was lifted. I felt so much better, I felt like a new human. This part of the story is pretty typical. Just everything went so much better, it’s unbelievable. So unbelievable, I don’t like talking about it, because I sound crazy. Vegetables are the problem? Well, that explains why the vegans know so much about mitigating their effects. It also explains why meat eaters think it’s crazy BS. So that brings me to today. I’m 9 months a carnivore and doing great. I’m still losing weight each week. My vanity doesn’t want me to upload this story quite yet, but I’ve made a lot of progress, and I’m always going to be a work in progress. So here is my before and after.

All in all I’ve lost 44 pounds and counting…as of 4/4/2019

Give me 6 more months I’ll look even better. Thank you all for promoting this way of eating. It’s these kinds of stories that encourage others to keep pursuing their health and to find real and lasting changes, whatever path it takes for them. My path led me to meat. And though I am no doctor or scholar, as an n of 1, I sure feel like I’m healed. #meatheals

I have been suffering asthma since a toddler, varicose veins requiring surgery and custom compression stockings since my first pregnancy and severe morning sickness with all of my pregnancies.

I was diagnosed with osteoporosis 17 years ago, and severe constipation after taking Calcium supplements for the osteoporosis while maintaining a healthy version of the Mediterranean diet. I have had a big garden and used very little processed food and I ground my own flour and became an expert home whole grain bread maker since 1977.

I had to stop using Calcium supplements and but the constipation persisted with menopausal onset. I tried eating prunes, more butter by the spoonful, figs, more fibrous vegetables, more fresh fruit, and of course lots of whole grain bread and porridge every morning. I eventually resorted to eating extra bran and then soluble vegetable fibres from a bottle, but now I had terrible problems with bloating and gas which inhibited my social life extremely. Who wants their health problems to be the brunt of jokes and eventually a definer of one’s identity.

About 12 years ago my toes began to swell badly on my left foot. Towards evening and after a good walk they would swell, turning red with purple tips and often would develop a crack on the tips of my toes. The pedologist said it was frostbite, even though it was summer and I had never had frostbite before!

I had another bone scan about 12 years ago and was told that I had a 100% chance of breaking my hip within 10 years and was prescribed Fosomax to which I had a very serious reaction due to very low calcium levels even though I was eating dairy and making yogurt regularly. Insoluble fibre depletes one’s body of Calcium as well as other important nutrients so I stopped eating bran and drank more milk like my Doctor suggested. Soon after, a different doctor ordered some tests and discovered that I have Hypothyroid disease.

One Christmas I got a bad stomach flu and diarrhea which emptied my gut and my husband wanted to try a herb cleanse, but after researching I suggested using lemon juice instead which was great and became a part of my daily diet since it helped to promote digestion and to reduce bloating. Since then I suffered several intestinal infections and had to take antibiotics and then started to take probiotics regularly. I was able to control symptoms by eating very little meat except for salmon and by taking daily lemons, probiotics, and a 4 hour fast before drinking >4 cups of milk in the evenings.

Last summer my skin broke out in 5 different rashes including ringworm which was not diagnosed until October. I had to plaster my body with the anti fungal and since most of the rashes were unaffected, I was given an oral anti fungal for 4 weeks. Still, 4 of the rashes remained. I had some relief and did some research on Hashimoto’s disease with the prodding of one of our daughters. The doctor ordered some further blood work which revealed low sodium, low T3, normal T4, and very high antibodies (99). He said to cut out dairy. “BUT WHAT ABOUT MY BONES?” He said to reintroduce it again in 4 weeks and that it would not deplete my Calcium levels significantly.

But after more research I decided to try the Autoimmune Protocol diet. It did help with a lot of the bloating and gas and one of the rashes faded slightly but my toes were still extremely painful and swollen by the late afternoon.

I had heard of Jordan Peterson and his daughter and the Meat Only diet and had wished that I could do that but I was so afraid of not getting enough calcium and concerned about getting constipated and being hospitalized and since I was 139 lbs and 5′ 10″ I was sure I would wither away to nothing and so was my family. And I was already following an unusual diet. But after 10 days on the Autoimmune Protocol diet, I WAS DESPERATE, much like Doreen in her amazing YouTube videos!

The toe pain was excruciating and the leg rash was burning and bright red and my cheeks were aflame and lo and behold I got a new and different mottled rash all over my face.

And so I am now a Carnivore. I decided to continue taking lemon before eating in order to hopefully prevent constipation and I haven’t had any problems since quitting the vegetables. I cut back the black coffee by 50% and I thought that in order to get enough fat while using leaner cuts of meat from our freezer, I would use butter while cutting out all other dairy. From the start, I took my supplements as well but with encouragement from the Carnivore community and especially due to Dr. Shawn Baker’s work, after 2 weeks I eliminated all of the vitamins, butter, and lemon and am now eating only beef with some lard so I don’t fade away and water and salt and black coffee . I am so encouraged by my health’s progress so far. The rashes have almost entirely disappeared except for the occasional flare up due to the silicone band on my compression stockings. And my facial skin looks better than it has since I was a kid. My tummy is as flat as a pancake except for the overly stretched skin from so many years of bloating, and the mucous in my sinuses and bronchial tubes has healed.

Even though I have several bulging and herniated disks and have been suffering from sciatica and other pinched nerves, with shooting pains and numbness in my feet and legs and arms and hands, those aches and pains have greatly diminished, I am able to sit and type this out in one sitting. Before I started the Carnivore diet, I had to keep moving because of numbness and pain.

It is now 3 1/2 weeks since I started this delicious Carnivore lifestyle. I am hoping that my inevitable progression towards even more compounding problems with antibodies triggering worsening Autoimmune complications will be abated. And for the last 2 days my energy is increasing and I don’t have to lie down several times during the day.

I am 68 years old and found myself running behind the shopping cart as I left Costco 2 nights ago. I was down in weight again this morning, 123 lbs but am working on eating more fat plus at least 2 lbs meat/day.

I had started the diet around July 17th which marks 3 months of being on this diet, and I can only say great things have happened. First allow me to preface with the issues I was currently suffering with.

  • Chronic wrist pains ( tore the cartilage in both wrists)
  • Shoulder pains not too sure what caused the pain or what the pain was, I am not a fan of going to the doctor who more than likely would have just tried to give me painkillers.
  • Damaged Cartilage in my knees from wrestling
  • Asthma
  • 213lbs

I was a piece of work for sure. I stumbled across Jordan Peterson on the JRE which led me to the interview with Dr. Shawn Baker. I was fascinated and the fact that I can eat beef products every day all day. I knew then and there the diet would be something that I could turn into a lifestyle, I did not anticipate the benefits to be as good as they were.

First 6 weeks I had digestion issues (very loose stool, erratic bowl movements). However, they were something that I would keep if it meant I got to keep the results I got. My wrist pains are non-existent I can do pushups, dips, and bench presses without the excruciating pain that plagued me for years making working out more of a torture session than anything else. I do see the occasional flair up on rainy days but that’s okay.

Knee pains & shoulder pains are also non existent I work in an environment where heavy objects are being lifted and I am on my feet 12 hours a day. I can do my job without worry of pain or discomfort.

Lastly my weight has dropped quite significantly from 213 down to a low of 183. The results are nothing short of amazing. It’s such a great feeling to watch your clothing just start to fall off. I haven’t been in this good of shape in years. I do weightlifting 6x a week, and cardio when I can now that my asthma has subsided. I would recommend everyone to try this for at least 90 days.

I started ZC 15 March 2015. I was on a strict Ketogenic Diet before, which did help with my osteoarthritis. A fat-fast made me pain-free. Adding veggies back made my pain come back. I did research about if I could survive without veggies, and found the group, Zeroing in on Health.

I came from strong painkillers and severe pain, to a life without medication and pain-free, most of the time. I have had asthma all my life. It is gone. My seasonal allergies are reduced, and I don’t need any medication on ZC. My tinnitus is gone. My gut troubles are gone. My dental health has improved. Hormonal improvement.

My skin is more healthy than ever. I have a bigger overarm now, than when I was training intensely, with no training.

Best of all, I was fighting a depression, which wouldn’t leave. I have had depression since childhood, very often. I haven’t had any, on zc, not even now, when my Company was bankrupt. I do have a mental clarity on ZC that I never had dreamed of. I am really more me, and I dare to live in the moment.

My libido is better than ever, and I feel younger than I have felt in many years. I am 50 years old.

I love meat, and I love what it does for my body. I was a carboholic, and now I have no cravings, at all. ZC made my life so much better.

Annie – 31 year vegetarian now carnivore

Let me tell you a bit about myself, I live in just outside of Brisbane, Australia, I’m 45 years old, have 4 daughters ranging from 19 to 11 years, I work five days a week and am studying a health sciences degree full-time online. I decided to do a Bachelor of Food and Nutrition, after I became obsessed with using food for medicine and good health. I want to help others regain their health as I have gained mine back since starting a ketogenic diet over four years ago, I’m now carnivore.

For as long as I can remember I have suffered from IBS issues – gut pain and cramping, explosive diarrhoea, severe constipation – first seeing a GP for it when I was 14 years old. I never had a weight issue until having my first baby, but it certainly became a huge issue for the next 15 years. I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis when I was pregnant with my first daughter and during two pregnancies had gestational diabetes. Over these years I also suffered terrible GORD, repetitive disc bulges, sleep issues, asthma, thrush, recurring chest, sinus and urinary tract infections, major anxiety and depression issues. I had allergy tests done, where I was allergic to 13 of the 16 things I had been tested for and was told I was pre-type 2 diabetic by my overweight GP, who told me I should just expect it as it was in my family.

About 5 years ago, my health was heading south rapidly, with almost daily headaches and weekly migraines. I had a strange turn one day where I blacked out while driving, with my then four-year-old in the car with me. Apparently, I was slurring like I was drunk, but I managed to get my little girl to call the ambulance. I have no recollection of the event, except that I came to with two ambulance officers in my car trying to establish what had happened to me. My husband and police were on the scene when I came to as well, but despite being taken to hospital and tests being done, I never found out what had happened to me – except that they thought the migraine I had, had caused the event.

A few months later I got very unwell with a chest infection, landing myself in hospital for 12 days. My asthma was in a very bad way and I could hardly walk the corridors in the hospital without bringing on an attack. I gained about 5 kilograms during my hospital stay and was referred to a dietician to try to get my weight and health under control. I followed her recommendations religiously as I hated what was happening to me, but all I managed to do was gain more weight. She made me feel like I couldn’t possibly have been following the guidelines she’d set for me and that I was cheating myself.

I’d heard cutting sugar from your diet was good, so I stopped adding sugar on my morning oats and cutting it back substantially from my home baking, which gained me a small win with a couple of kilos weightloss. In November 2014, I then saw a documentary that literally changed my life, featuring Dr Maryanne Demasi, Dr Peter Bruckner, Professor Tim Noakes and Dr Steve Phinney. It was about the low carb, high fat diet and so, fuelled with the small win I’d had from ditching the sugar from my diet, I thought I’d give it a go.

My weight dropped incredibly quickly and majority of my health issues all but disappeared. I haven’t even had a head cold in the four years since starting. Everyone at work gets sick over winter, but I have not as yet. LCHF cured my GORD, disc bulges, asthma, allergies, thrush and I never experienced any more chest, sinus or urinary tract infections. I got stricter with my food choices and went VLC/strict keto, all the while my weight was still slowly creeping off.

At this point I should say I had been a lazy vegetarian for 31 years. I say lazy, as I had eaten fish very occasionally for a few years but never too regularly. I had however been doing a lot of research, reading lots of studies and following some very intelligent people on Twitter. All my research had me concluding that although I was way healthier in my food choices now eating keto, I had to eat a lot more protein than I was. I introduced fish regularly and, much to the shock of my family, I started eating chicken again – it had been 31 years. I started feeling so much better almost immediately, stronger. I then caught wind of Dr Baker’s carnivore study, which, both research and my own curious nature, had me very interested in. Crazy right, as I was only eating chicken, fish and eggs? But I did it, very strictly, ditching coffee, cream, cheese and only eating the chicken, fish, eggs and drinking water. I had it in my head though that I wanted to be brave and try red meat and so set a personal goal to achieve that before the end of the study – I knew for optimal health it was for the best, but I had a lot of mental hurdles stopping me. It came to the last week of the study, I felt amazing but disappointed in myself for not giving red meat a go like I wanted, so one day on my way home from work, I bought a rib eye, cooked it and ate the whole thing. I believe I have eaten at least one piece of red meat every day since.

To date my overall weight loss is about 40kg (or 88lb), with a measurement loss of about 120cm (or 47 inch) total. Hormonally, I have re-gained the 4kg loss I experienced during the study, which I intend on shedding again in the new year. Let’s just say, being a woman is unfair sometimes and the one thing that no diet has helped with is my lifetime suffering from endometriosis. I’m having further surgery in the new year, so hopefully I can get on top of the fake hormones currently circulating my body causing these adverse effects.

So, what happened when I went completely carnivore? Whilst LCHF/Keto helped the majority of my conditions, I was still suffering bouts of IBS issues, some arthritic aches and anxiety. Since going carnivore, I have been able to ascertain that it was vegetables still causing my residual IBS and occasional arthritic soreness. I am physically so much stronger than I have ever been and the recovery from exercise is outstanding. Where I once would have been sore for days and in some instances great pain, I have minimal soreness and generally only the following day, if at all. My mental clarity has been the overwhelming improvement which has me off my medication for the first time in about 10 years. Mentally, I would never have been able to take on such a gruelling schedule of fulltime study, working 5 days a week and four kids before, but carnivore has allowed me that. The first-wave carnivore study began in August 2017, for a three-month duration but I have remained carnivore ever since. I intend on staying this way for the foreseeable future as well for the outstanding health effects it has had on my body and mind.

My whole life, my health has been an enigma to me. I was always skinny as a kid and could, and did, eat pretty much anything I wanted without gaining weight. That included a lot of sugar. Sugar poured over my cereal in the morning, sugar in the juices and sodas I drank, and any candy, ice cream or cake I could get my hands on.

What could possibly go wrong? I was skinny, which means healthy, right?

But I had a variety of chronic maladies that would crop up from time to time – back pains, fatigue, OCD symptoms, infections, joint problems, digestion problems, and increasingly, anxiety. An athlete I was not.

As I got older, the problems came and went, and at times I even became athletic. But my blood tests started getting worse, and symptoms came more frequently. I gained a little weight as I grew through my 30’s into my 40’s but kept exercising and trying to eat what I thought was a healthy diet.
But my A1c, blood pressure and cholesterol climbed anyway. I was already taking statins and blood pressure pills in my early 30’s, even though I looked perfectly healthy. I was, as they say, skinny fat.

Well, my fragile world crashed down about 7 years ago following surgery to remove a non-malignant tumor from a nerve in my thigh. The surgery ‘went fine’ as the doctors told me. But 3 days later, I could not get out of bed. I was crippled by a fatigue and anxiety that left me confused and helpless. Over the following months, my symptoms got worse and worse until I could barely leave the house. It was like living with a migraine that never went away. Among the more notable symptoms:

  • Hypersensitivity to light and sound – I literally wore silicon earplugs and dark glasses every time I left the house. Public places overwhelmed me with noise.
  • Insomnia – I did not sleep for days and weeks at a time, leaving my waking hour a walking nightmare.
  • Asthma – Never had it before, now I was taking multiple inhalers.
  • Carpel Tunnel – all of sudden, I started waking, when I could fall asleep, with crippling hand and wrist pain.
  • Digestion – swung in both directions.
  • Sinusitis/Allergies – my nose was clogged, my eyes teared endlessly.
  • Fainting – the falling over without warning and slamming my head into the floor was definitely a low point.
  • And CRIPPLING Fatigue. Crippling. That was the worst – sitting almost paralyzed for hours.

I thought I was dying.

Then, a series of chance events led me towards the carnivorous diet I strive to maintain now. I visited every kind of doctor I’d heard of (and some I hadn’t), and eventually settled on the diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and took more medicines and supplements that you can possibly imagine. Some helped.

But it was an encounter with an acupuncturist that started my shifting paradigm on food and diet. He asked me about how I ate. I said I eat pretty well. He smiled and said, “what do you consider pretty well?” Hmmm. What did I consider well and why?
I expected a lecture on plant-based diets and fiber, but was quite shocked when he told me I needed to eat more meat. Meat? Seriously? Last thing I expected from someone I thought of us very spiritual.

Now his diet recommendations were based upon the Weston Price work and foundation. Naturally raised meats, raw dairy, and traditionally prepared plant foods – ferments, soaking/sprouting, stewing, etc. Not carnivorous, but certainly not vegetarian.

In the coming years, I found, researched and tried all the usual lower carb suspects – paleo, primal, bulletproof, keto, intermittent fasting, etc. I read the books and blogs – all of them taught me things. They made me rethink all I thought that I knew. And not just about which foods to eat, but when, how much and why.

And then the fateful day I stumbled upon the story of the Andersens, the family happily raising a family of 4 on nothing but ribeyes. I was stunned. It seemed impossible. What about a balanced plate with lots of colors and macros and such? What about disease and cholesterol and heart attacks?

A bigger challenge was trying to explain to my wife, who had quietly suffered through my illness and countless doctors, pills and potions, that I was now going to eat steak for breakfast, lamb burgers for lunch and more steak for dinner. Now she was convinced I was going to die, and while I thought she might be right, I felt better than I had in a long time. Digestion was simpler. I slept better. I stopped wearing ear plugs and could go in the sun without bursting into flames. I cut back on medications, I started doing more around the house, I was increasingly productive at work.

I know I don’t have all the answers. I still have health challenges and take some medications. But the simplicity and consistency of carnivory is a huge help. I don’t know if it will change my life expectancy in the long run, but it has increased my quality of life tremendously right now.

I’ll sum it up simply by saying I am blessed.
I am blessed that I am not dead.
I am blessed that I can work full time and even travel.
I am blessed that I can still learn new things.
And I am blessed that I get to eat a ribeye any time I damn well please.

Our oldest son has asthma. He is 10. This year he spent several days in the ICU with a severe bout. This experience was horrendous as any parent with a child suffering from asthma knows.

My wife and I are both Paleo, Ketogenic dieters. I actually had a biochemistry teacher in 1999 mention an all meat diet as “possible”. He wasn’t advocating it for health, just suggesting it was possible. So when I heard Dr Baker on the JRE, I was intrigued.

Our son and his younger brother both went full Carnivore with us, three months ago. We logged his pharmaceutical use. We took ketone measurements with a ketonix and sat back baffled and elated as his body seemed to begin a natural renaissance.

Day two his night coughing, was gone. A dry, persistent, 7 year cough. Gone. It has never returned.

Eight days out of the ICU he went to districts for wrestling and placed fourth, giving him his first birth into State. His breathing on the mat, almost night and day. Not perfect. But better. He used his rescue inhaler fifty percent less during districts.

3 weeks into Carnivore and he was able to go entire matches at State without gasping for air, very little secondary breathing muscle engagement, which was amazing.

He can now sprint an entire 2 miles without a pre-exercise rescue inhaler. Running of any kind, was a massive trigger for him. He sometimes will wheeze after hard cardio, but is almost always able to self regulate. This would have been impossible three months ago.

He is developing “normally” for a wrestler now. His body is responding to weights and grappling like never before. In three short months.

He does not use Advair.

His allergies are nearly nonexistent, and as we have spent time traveling to the East coast, just a nasal rinse every few days has been perfect.

It is my opinion that our LACK of animal fat in diets may be triggering the alarming uptick in childhood asthmatics. There is some actually data on this which can be found in some of the research out there. Our son was VERY picky in his terrible twos and into his threes. I do not think this was an accident as to his manifestation of the disease.

Carnivore has completely changed the trajectory of our boys life.
