In 2002 I was diagnosed with a grade 4 spondylolisthesis. I saw a specialist and surgery was discussed. I decided against surgery since I found the prospect quite scary, I had 3 children to look after and didn’t fancy taking the risk. It was agreed that I be put on medication, 1600mg of brufen retard daily along with 150mg of ranitidine daily to protect me from side effects of the brufen.

So that was my life, for the past 16 years I have taken the brufen and ranitidine daily. The brufen helped with my inflammation, I was able to get up out of bed in the morning without too much pain anymore and so long as I didn’t lift anything or stay on my feet for too long, or sit for too long, or lay flat on my back or try to exercise then I was ok, the pain was manageable. I was basically the sort of person that wouldn’t do ANYTHING for fear of setting off the pain.

When I hit 30 I decided that I wanted to exercise, so I began experimenting with what I could do. I bought a crosstrainer & I joined a boot camp, I found that so long as I performed exercises correctly and controlled with little weight then I could cope with the back pain afterwards, sometimes I would take extra brufen to help me to get over working out.

Upon being diagnosed with spondylolisthesis I was also advised to ‘not get fat’ in case this added more pressure to my already weakened spine. So over the past 16 years my eating habits have changed a lot from a junk food diet to basically starving myself and ‘surviving’ on diet pills to then eventually following a low fat diet with lots of veggies and quorn. I’ve never been vegetarian but I did believe that steering away from animal protein was the healthiest option. Mixed in with this was my insatiable appetite for sweet food, especially chocolate, along with the belief that all calories are equal… I would often substitute a day of eating meals for a day of eating absolute junk. These days would be followed by days of guilt and self loathing in which I’d starve myself or stick to ‘healthy’ low fat food.

In January 2018 I began looking into keto and through my research I came across Danny Vega who spoke about the idea of eating an all meat diet, straight off I thought it was crazy but after trying keto for a month or so Carnivore became more and more appealing, I didn’t enjoy counting macros, I found that my binge and emotional eating did not change and I would feel so guilty and down on myself when I went over my calories… plus, who really likes eating veg when you can eat as much meat as you’d like and not worry…?!

I decided to go for it and on 28 February 2018 my life changed for good!! I ate all the meat, I didn’t count a thing and I’ve been feeling more amazing every day. Within 10 days I was completely off the 1600mg of brufen retard (and the ranitidine) I’d been taking daily for the past 16 years! Since then I have not needed to take the medication despite increasing the amount of weight lifting and general exercise I now do, I quite literally never get back pain anymore!! It’s been 5 months so far and I know this is it, I will never go back. Aside from the miracle of no longer suffering the back pain I’ve had to medicate for the past 16 years I also feel so amazing mentally, calm, happy. I’m leaner, my body composition has changed, I feel so healthy. Another absolutely awesome thing about being on this diet is the overwhelming feeling of freedom.. I love that I no longer feel guilty about what I eat or how much I eat… when I’m hungry I eat, when I’m full I stop.

I can’t believe it’s taken me until I’m 41 to find a diet that works for my entire body & mind… Carnivore quite clearly is THE diet we should all follow. 🥩❤️

After 4 years of being a vegan I was sick of being bloated, tired, constipated, and having low energy. I am now 23 years old 5 ft 5.5 inches tall. All of my family is thin with fast metabolisms. Including al of my grandparents and relatives. My whole life I could get away with eating a big chocolate cake before bed and in the morning I’d wake up with a flat stomach. About a year into being vegan, that stopped being the case.

Gary Yourofsky and Freelee the Banana Girl made compelling arguments for my 18 year old self and by the time I was 19 I was a proud advocate for veganism. My diet turned to tofu, asparagus, salads, bean burgers, rice, smoothies, lots of fresh squeezed juices, corn tortillas, pastas, veggie burgers, vegan tamales, vegan anything at whole foods – including the vegan donuts.

At this time I was about 115 lbs looking and feeling great. 3.5 years later, Fall of 2017, I was at 147 lbs and feeling heavy. The last 3 years of being vegan I would wake up with a bloated stomach – and it seemed to never go away. My legs got fatter, my face got rounder, and running was a chore (before I had enjoyed running). By the end of 2017 I got on the scale to find out that I was at 157 lbs! That was so scary because getting to 160 for me seemed very wrong. My mom is 5’3 and 110 lbs. I have thin genes. Why was I the fat one in the family after being the “healthiest” since I was vegan?!

I went to a naturopath and had my blood tested. Everything came back in normal ranges. And I didn’t get any answers to why I felt so tired and bloated. I also mentioned that I never had gas. Like, ever. The vegan doctor told me that was because I was eating such a clean plant based diet.

My boyfriend has always been against my high carb vegan choices and he’s always said the low carb diet works best for him. One night last year he made some filets for himself on his new barbecue. He kept insisting that I try a bite of it because “it was the best filet he’s ever made”. After him saying “Come on, moderation is healthy! Just ONE bite!” a few times, I gave in.

That bite was so delicious and so juicy. My whole being just went MMMMMM! I ended up eating the whole filet. I felt so guilty for eating a dead animal and enjoying it. I told myself it would be a one time secret thing.

The next morning after waking up, the first thing I noticed was that I didn’t feel bloated! My stomach was much flatter. What?! I was so excited I ran to my boyfriend and told him to feel my side, because it was thinner! I felt so much less inflamed in my stomach.

I wondered if there were some types of vitamins in the meat that my body had been lacking…? I researched this and added supplements into my vegan diet so I didn’t have to eat animals.

In October of 2017 I began binge watching Jordan Peterson on youtube. By January 2018 I was familiar with his daughter, Mikhaila’s health journey with her diet. It all made so much sense. I happened to be having bad upper back pain as well. I ended up going to a chiropractor who took x-rays of my entire back/neck. He put my x-rays up on the wall and said, “Honey, I’m afraid that your’e full of shit.” He pointed out that my intestines were completely backed up and clogged of shit! You could see the clouded clogged shadows on the x-rays. So gross! He then began massaging out my intestines which was very painful. He was trying to loosen me up and get things moving in there.

How could I be so backed up with my high-fiber vegan diet? I ate tons of greens!

I decided to start trying the “Mikhaila Peterson”/Jordan Peterson diet” and incorporating more meat. Luckily the chiropractor adjustments seemed to really help. A few of the adjustments he gave me resulted in me breaking out in a big sweat. I felt a huge release of toxins. I am adding this chiro info in case other people may need this – it REALLY helped me release toxins and gave me a great boost. I should also mention here that the last 2 years of being vegan my menstrual cycles became irregular (never been on bc). Adding in more meat + the day after my chiro adjustment I started my cycle and it’s been regular since then. (sorry if that’s tmi but it’s important stuff for us ladies).



I lost 12 lbs in February with not much exercise – just a couple days of beginner skiing and eating a lot of steaks that month. I was back to 145 lbs.

In May I got much more serious about a carnivore based diet. I listened to Shawn Baker’s podcast on Joe Rogan (after seeing so many people mention it on meatheals.com) and I subscribed to Butcher’s Box. I also loaded up on meat at Costco and taught myself how to barbecue. Not going to lie, I felt kind of bad ass cooking for myself on the BBQ. 😉

I am happy to say that I am now 127 lbs. I have lost 30 lbs in just a few months – with little to no exercise! And my stomach is FLAT!! I feel thin. My face has slimmed out again. Also, I know this sounds silly but I can actually feel my bones when I’m walking – like how i used to feel when I was a teenager. I feel my rib cage under my skin, I feel my hip bones, and I feel my collar bones again! That sounds weird but looking back all of that was hidden under inflammation and fat. I feel so much lighter. I’m happy with my weight now that I feel so great and I am getting back to my normal range. But I don’t have a “goal weight”. I am just looking forward to seeing what my body does and what feels comfortable and healthy.

I also feel so much more freedom. Eventually in the vegan community it seems like you can never succeed. They can be a very judgmental and intense community. Also looking back it is so obvious to me that my weight issues were a result of my vegan diet. But at the time, I was looking for answers everywhere else! I thought it could have been from an antibiotic I was on after a surgery a few years ago, stress, hormones, etc etc. That is how convinced I was that my plant based diet was best for me even though it clearly wasn’t.

I don’t care what anyone says about my diet – I feel amazing. My energy is back. I feel SO mentally sharp. I was able to finish projects that have been sitting in my drafts for ages. I sleep great. My bowel movements are finally regular – I can actually feel my food being digested again. It really reminds me of being a kid or teenager – these little feelings in my stomach are back after years of feeling plugged.

I know everyone has an opinion about what everyone should eat. But here is what is working for me. I go with what I feel and listen to my body. I eat when I’m hungry. Some people may think I’m over eating and some people may think I’m starving myself. I DON’T CARE! I really don’t have any rules for myself – as I had so many rules as a vegan. I don’t consider it a “diet” but rather just a way to fuel and fill myself.

In the morning I have an iced coffee. And then I have a late lunch/early dinner of a big fatty steak with an egg or two (runny sunny side up). I may have some avocado on the side.

That is really it for now. I feel like my body is still eating away at the fat storage I am carrying around since being vegan. Sounds strange but I can now actually feel my body eating away at my fat storage around my “muffin top” area! This meal plan keeps me satiated and I have ZERO cravings. I never have the “stuffed” feeling. I remember the last few years after eating a vegan meal I would just feel so exhausted and need to go lay down to digest. Not anymore! Also, it’s easy for me not to snack knowing that i’ll be having a big juicy steak later on.

I am sure that as time goes on, I will be adjusting this but right now it is working for me and I feel amazing. If I do get hungry later or I burn more calories that day, I’ll eat more chopped meat, eggs, or avo. But right now I usually don’t need to.

What Happened to Me:

In January 2016 I was diagnosed with Cauda Equina Syndrome after suffering a massive central disc herniation at L5-S1. This is a rare syndrome caused by compression of the cauda equina which is the horse tail of nerves connected to the spinal cord in the lumbar spine. Prior to this event I suffered 2 years of severe back pain and headaches after being misdiagnosed and undergoing a very unnecessary spinal tap and subsequent blood patch for a CSF leak in 2014. Prior to this the only time I ever went to a Doctor was for a yearly check-up.

During this time I experienced a decline in my neurologic function from the waist down until I ultimately woke up one morning paralyzed from the waist down, unable to move my feet or legs and with complete loss of bladder control. I was also in suicidal level pain. Rather than go to the hospital network I was dealing with for 2 years, I had a friend drive me to another hospital Emergency Dept where I underwent an Emergency MRI, my first one and was transported to a state of the art spine center for emergency neurosurgery to decompress my cauda equina.

After surgery my pain and chronic 2 year headache was gone. I was left barely able to walk, my legs very weak and with right foot drop. I was unable to feel most of my right leg and right foot. My injury was incomplete and a combination of sensory and motor dysfunction. Although my neurosurgeon and the spine center were amazing and restored my faith in the Medical system, there was little research about Cauda Equina Syndrome, and they were not quite sure what to do with me.

Having a background in healthcare myself (I am a nurse and a pharmacist), I took massive drastic action because I had nothing to lose by trying. The first of which was getting myself discharged from the spine center with home services and this is where my experiment began.

My Full Recovery 2.5 years later:

After reading PubMed daily and over 500 papers and books during my 2 year recovery, I started implementing the science I was reading. I started a ketogenic diet 80/15/5, hydrating with a gallon of water a day so my discs were getting the raw materials they needed to heal via diffusion during restorative sleep. The next thing I did was start training everyday with the rehab exercises to correct my gait, muscle imbalances and build my endurance. Everyday I spent time visualizing my nerves regenerating and using what I learned about epigenetics from Bruce Lipton. I kept my mindset strong and positive at all times in a state of unwavering faith and determination.

The strange thing I noticed myself doing was intuitively gravitating towards eating a more meat based diet. The past 5 months my carbs have reduced dramatically and I have more carnivore days. I truly believe providing my nerves with an alternative fuel source in the form of ketones is the reason they recovered and for the full recovery I was fortunate to have. I also believe this way of eating generated the stem cells in my body I needed to repair L5-S1. My injury was a peripheral nerve injury which is more forgiving than a spinal cord injury. There is no way anyone can tell me that nerves can not regenerate or recover. It is possible and it is a slow process.

The final result of my recovery experiment:

  • Pain Free
  • Medication Free
  • 20 pound maintained fat loss and overhaul of body composition.
  • Increased flexibility
  • Complete resolution of right foot drop
  • Complete return of motor and sensory function in my legs and feet minus 2 toes on my right foot (still have hope) and my saddle.
  • Complete return of bladder and resolution of saddle anesthesia.
  • Correction of gait and able to walk normal
  • Ran a 5k in under 35 minutes
  • Able to train like Arnold in the gym with weights again
  • More endurance in training
  • Return to my full-time pharmacy job
  • As a side benefit cured from PCOS, eczema resolved and glowing wrinkle free skin.
  • A spine that my neurosurgeon said looks better than the general population
  • Resolution of hypertrophy and inflammation at L5-S1 facet joint
  • Improved glute and core strength resulting in increased lumbar spine stabilization.
  • In the best shape of my life at 40 years old

I shared my story in the hope it will add value and be of help to someone dealing with a neurological condition. Don’t be afraid to empower yourself and work outside the healthcare system to find your cure. Thank you Dr Baker for the knowledge you have shared on your platforms and for your role in my continued recovery and health transformation.

Nevada found herself suffering from cauda equina syndrome, which required unnecessary medical interventions that did not help her.
Today, Nevada eats a mostly carnivore diet and has not only restored her health and fitness, but is in the best shape of her life.

In August of 2017, about 5 weeks before my 52nd birthday, I wrote an email to Dr. Shawn Baker to ask for help.

A few months before, I was in the emergency room for what I thought was sciatica. The pain shooting down my leg was so debilitating that it was impossible to stand without being doubled over.

But the ER physician’s x-rays noted no deviations in my spinal column, such as bulging or herniated discs. This would likely rule out sciatica.

Although she did see that I had arthritis. When I registered surprise, she told me that she would have been more surprised if I didn’t have it. Apparently, arthritis is the rule, not the exception, for men in their fifties.

When I followed up with my primary care physician, he reaffirmed that I had arthritis and the leg pain was caused by it. He was not pleased when I told him I lift weights every day. And when I told him that my weight-training included squats, he actually looked horrified.

He informed me that I would have to give up weight training and take up swimming. And basically consigned me to a diet of boneless, skinless chicken breast and vegetables for the rest of my life.

When I suggested taking up the Atkins diet, he insisted that the Atkins diet didn’t work, and as a testament to that “fact,” he claimed that Atkins had died of a heart attack.

When I attempted to correct him (since Dr. Robert Atkins died of a traumatic brain injury after falling on some ice), he maintained that Atkins died of a heart attack and that he had known Dr. Atkins personally.

Maybe he did know Atkins, but that doesn’t change the fact that he was wrong about how Atkins died.

Reluctantly, I resigned myself to do as he said. But unsurprisingly, after a few days of forcing myself to go to the gym, bypass the weight room on my way to the locker room to reach the pool and slog around in the water for an hour or so, I stopped going to the gym altogether.

And my PC also put me on an anti-depressant regimen. (Imagine that! I was depressed, too!) I also got a prescription for the NSAID Meloxicam for the pain, although he informed me that the benefit of Meloxicam for arthritic pain wouldn’t be great.

I love lifting weights. There’s such a sense of gratification as you exert yourself to the limit, as the weights crawl upward, squeaking out that last rep. And it was a gratification that splashing around back and forth in a swimming pool just couldn’t match.

With the diet, the drugs, the pain and not being allowed to lift weights, I found the joy had been sucked out of my life. The things that I enjoyed most and looked forward to every day had been taken from me.

I don’t know how I happened upon Dr. Shawn Baker’s Twitter feed, but I’m glad I did. Here was a man about my age, who sure as hell didn’t look like arthritis was keeping him down, and obviously did more than swimming to keep in shape.

After inundating him with questions via Twitter, I decided to give Dr. Baker’s approach a try. (At this point, what did I have to lose?) So, I wrote Dr. Baker my story, about what my doctor said, including the diet, the drugs and the exercise, and he was kind enough to write me back.

An excerpt from his response to me: “Just in general terms (and not to be taken as medical advice) a stronger joint is a healthier joint and is relatively more resistant to arthritis. In my view, diet plays a huge role in joint pathology, with meat being the least likely substance to contribute to it.”

After a few false starts (as a nearly incorrigible carb-addict), I embraced carnivory.

Fast-forward to today: Since January, I no longer take Meloxicam (because I don’t need it) or anti-depressants, and I am back in the weight room, doing full squats, without pain.

I cannot adequately express my gratitude for Dr. Baker’s guidance.

It seems like when I turned 50 everything started downhill. Up until then (and after) I tried mostly low fat, high fiber diet which included vegetable juicing.

I was 125 pounds in high school and went from about 135 to 185 from 45 years old to 55.

I tried a LCHF diet in 2012 but was scared out of it by my doctors even though my weight went from 184 to 125 in about 6 months.

My reason to go low carb this year was:
1. Gum disease progression: a lot of deep pockets and getting close to losing a back molar.
2. A1C was 5.7 last April and my morning, fasting glucose had been creeping way up to 110

Four month SUCCESSFUL results:

  1. 4 years of gum disease reversed as of check up May 3. No more deep pockets, no bleeding and teeth in great shape. Gum recession will not grow back

  2. April, 2018 A1C was 5.2 from 5.7 last April. Fasting morning glucose at 94 form 110 in December

  3. Had IBS, bleeding anal fissure, internal hemorrhoids and terrible gas. 99% gone. Unreal!!!!!

  4. Shoulder and back pain 90% better. Did 130 push-ups on Monday in 4 sets vs. 20 with a week of shoulder pain last year. Now doing deep knee bends and couldn’t ever thing of that last year because of back pain.

  5. Every morning I would wake up with a runny nose filling several paper towels with mucous. It’s now 90% better and was even better when I did not have dairy but have added some of that back.

  6. Weaned blood pressure meds to nothing and BP normal first time in over 20 years (was normal only with meds last 8). I had 4 stents in 3 arteries in 2010 with 1 artery clear and one 100% blocked (there are 5 major arteries feeding you heart). My chest pain did not go away after stents and cardiologist tried meds (renexa and long-acting nitro) neither worked so I said forget trying.

    10 years of chest pain vanished after about a month of this and I thought at first it was my imagination (even though was getting great results on my new/used Concept 2 Rower).

    My GP does a carotid artery scan every April and in 2017 he said the blockage had gotten much worse from 2016 and said I need to do something soon.

    What was I supposed to do? Was already following all the stupid bullshit they told me to do.

    This April scan showed “significant” improvement over last year!!!!! And that was with 8 months of shitty diet and only 3.5 months of carnivore.

    My chest pain is gone and I have not felt this good since I was 30!!!!!!

I’m 27 and I was suffering from so many autoimmune disorders since I was a kid including eczema, horrible rashes that covers my entire body, never-ending itchiness, severe acne on my face, cystic acne on my buttocks, vaginal area, and armpits (Hidradenitis suppurativa), back pain, extreme PMS, bladder inflammation (always feeling like I have to pee), extreme depression, crying, anger, and suicidal attempts (took anti-depressants since I was 15, but didn’t help), constant bloating, weight gain, intense sugar cravings, arthritis in my ankles and wrists, vaginal infections due to candida overgrowth, ovarian cyst, IBS, acid reflux, allergies, early graying of hair, and many more…

All of that is completely gone since I went carnivore. After elimination I found out that I severely react to gluten, dairy, soy, legumes, nuts, eggs, and grains. I tried low carb, but I was never 100% symptom-free until I gone full carnivore. If I eat something bad those symptoms come back. Ever since I fixed my diet I advanced so much in my career and personal life. I never knew it is possible to feel this amazing.

I am 33 years old. For a long time I consumed a lot of bad things on a regular basis: Mountain Dew, Monster, all kinda of carbs (especially rice; my wife is Asian). I wasn’t taking good care of myself.

In 2013, my body started rejecting the abuse. I knew this would be coming, but I didn’t expect it at that age. I was very active (military). Vigorous exercise for at least an hour every day. Then, I started gaining weight, and my knee got real bad. I had chronic tendinitis in my knee caused by Osgood-Schlatter (misdiagnosed many times as Chronic Osgood-Schlatter). I started getting stomach issues; diarrhea, inconsistent BMs, bloating, gas, heartburn (I never had heartburn!), trouble sleeping, hip pain, shoulder pain, and back pain. It all came to a head when I got diverticulitis. My diverticulitis was actually on the lower right side. So, everyone (including me, I did my research before going to the ER) thought it was appendicitis. It was like, “Oh. It’s appendicitis. No big deal. We’ll prep you for surgery. Meanwhile, we’ll take this CT just to confirm.” Well, that CT showed diverticulitis, not appendicitis. And, the doctor’s were freaked! They made me think that was way worse than anything else. Why? My age. They concerned about the pockets that form to create the diverticula, or if I had other issues. Scared the crap out of me. I had a colonoscopy on my birthday in 2014. Some minor polyps were discovered. I had surgery on my knee a month later to do a patellar tendon cadaver graft. I felt horrible. I felt like my body was giving up on me, and my knee never recovered.

So, started my journey towards trying become healthier. At the end of 2014 I started a calorie restrictive diet. Whole foods, low fat, lean meats, plenty of veggies and fruits…and, more resistance training. Yes, I lost a little bit of weight. I started feeling a little better, but I couldn’t sustain it. It was too expensive, and cravings started to kill me. And, I started feeling bloated all the time, gassy, and heartburn. Then, I started a high protein diet, and restricted my carbs. The advice at the time was like 20% carb, 30% fat, and 50% protein. Not exact, but basically stick with low carb intake and only whole grain products. I continued exercise as well. My knee had a brief period where it felt a lot better (but, still about 60%). Again, not sustainable. Same feeling with my gut, still too expensive, and my energy levels started dropping. I just couldn’t stop the cravings for Mountain Dew and energy drinks. I wouldn’t last a day without them. So, I tried going back to calorie restriction again, but extreme this time. No more than 1,200 calories a day. Still didn’t work. Unsustainable. This was over the course of 3 years. I had been back to the doctor with another case of diverticulitis, my knee had gotten worse again, my hip got worse, and I had some serious BM issues. I gave up. Just figured my body was breaking down and there wasn’t anything I could do about it.

So, since January of 2018, I’ve been listening to the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. I heard him speak about keto several times. High fat, when it was broken down seemed like it was a good idea. I looked into some things to get started, and realized it was a lot of counting macros. And, I just didn’t have the money to ensure I was on that kind of level. Then, a little over a month ago he brought up the Carnivore Diet briefly, and mentioned Dr. Shawn Baker. So, on Wednesday, March 21st, I listened to the episode with Dr. Shawn Baker. I was blown away. I started doing my research into evolution, brain size, digestive systems, and cholesterol. I realized what was Dr. Baker said wasn’t crazy. Finally, that Friday, I came home from work, and said no more carbs! Only meat and water. I ate just the meat of what my wife had cooked that night. Ended up getting hungry before bed. Ate some hamburger and eggs. The next morning I woke up starving! I hadn’t had an appetite like that in years! I had been eating for two reasons: random cravings, and I knew I had to. That day it continued. I was ravenous! I wasn’t bloated, I didn’t have heartburn, and I felt good! I could not believe that in just a few hours I was feeling that much better. I said to myself, I need to slow down, and not get too excited. Some of that had to be attributed to a placebo effect, right? Maybe. I don’t know. What I do know is the feeling continued for the last month. Also, that day, I drove almost 10 hours. Got out of my vehicle when I got to my destination, and my knee was fine! It wasn’t stiff, or painful at all!

Maybe it’s too soon to know everything. I’m only a month in. But, this is what I know: down 14 lbs., no bloating, no heartburn, I have an appetite, knee pain way less than before, no hip pain, no back pain, no shoulder pain, sleeping better, waking up easier, more energy, and I can afford it! It’s just so simple.

I am a 21 year old male. I currently weigh 297lbs. After listening to Dr Shawn Baker on JRE, I was convinced that the Carnivore diet would be worth a try for me… whilst I was overweight this was a very low issue on my list.

At 18 years old I had set 9 powerlifting world records and won 3 classes at the world championships. I was extremely proud that I had maintained a weight below 275lbs (265 was my average weight) despite smashing meals as I wished, priding myself on high consumption levels being offset by my training intensity.

But a year prior I had torn my left glute, I had not let it heal correctly and continued to train. I regularly needed time off in order to cope with the pain level I’d be in, often unable to walk. Thankfully my sport requires standing, laying and standing.

After becoming a world champion, this pain just got worse and worse. Starting a full time job, I suddenly had a requirement to be able to walk to and from work. This was a struggle. I dialed down training intensity until I trained no more and lived every day in pain. My eating continued, both to console my pain and because it was the only thing I could still do. I shot up to 450lbs eventually. Fat, unhealthy, and in pain. Even sitting in my car was a struggle!

After many visits to doctors… many returns to the gym and a lot of pain management… I got decently OK at managing my pain. I was back in the gym daily and once again the pain intensified. No more gym but at least I had started to take some control. I had started to lose weight. Back down to 340lbs… not great, but better than before! To give an idea of what I considered to be a manageable amount of pain: I couldn’t walk 100 yards without physically needing to stop and rest. By the end of the day, crawling up the stairs would usually lead to me crying in pain. I would lie in bed, need the toilet and had to continually decide between spoiling the bed or facing the pain… I’m happy to say I kept what dignity I had left. But that was me every day.

At 370 lbs, George needed pain killers to move around at all, and was still in great pain.

The doctors found I had degenerative disc disease, causing sciatica, and there was nothing they could do. This pain was what I faced for the rest of my life. Up until December 2017. Then carnivore began… now I walk regularly, going from an average of below quarter mile a day to averaging 3-4 miles per day (6,000 to 7,000 steps), including a steep 1 mile uphill walk daily! On top of that, I now cycle places I would often drive to, and I don’t have to make my fiancée take breaks every 20 seconds whilst walking. I’ve lost another 50lb and my muscles feel full and strong despite little to no weight training.

I can visit zoos, go shopping, and most importantly, enjoy life.

A year ago I was 20 years old, severely obese, in constant dire pain and had doubts I’d make it past 50 years old. A life that short would seem like a death sentence, but for me, 30 more years of this… that’s what seemed like a punishment!! Now I look forward to every day! I can’t wait to be in good, healthy shape! To make the most of my life and make the most of it with my beautiful fiancée who I can only thank for being so patient and helping me through this journey.

These are my health improvements after 1 year of cutting out all plants and dairy from my diet:

  1. Healed knee: I had a bike accident as a kid and have always felt a slight pain in my knee since then. My knee is now completely healed. The healing process took 6 month and my body performed something akin to surgery on it self: my knee got really swollen during the healing process and I felt something (which I believe was a tiny piece of gravel left from the bike accident) was being pulled out of my knee.

  2. No more back pain: I would wake up every morning with cramp in my back muscles. it’s all gone now.

  3. No more stiff muscles: most of my muscles used to be really stiff.

  4. Better bowel movements, no more diarrhea, no more bloody stool.

  5. Better digestion.

  6. No more night sweats. I would occasionally wake up during the night and my pillow would be soaked in sweat. No more.

  7. Not tired when I wake up in the morning. I’ve become a morning person.

  8. Not tired after eating.

  9. Better eyesight: everything is much sharper and colors are really vivid. I used to have to squint on sunny days before. Not anymore.

  10. Ocular migraine is gone: I think this is due to quitting coffee.

  11. Cleansed sinuses: my sinuses always used to be clogged up. now they have been cleansed. I have felt my pulse in my sinuses for the last 12 months.

  12. Regained sense of smell: directly after starting zero carb I noticed that I could smell the perfume of people on the streets. This had never happened before.

  13. No more anxiety: I used to get stressed out over stupid things. Now I’m the calmest I’ve ever been. I think this is due to quitting coffee.

  14. Better memory.

  15. Better cognitive functions.

  16. Constantly high energy levels.

  17. Better sleep and better dreams. I have not had a nightmare since I started with this diet.

  18. No more dry skin.

  19. No physical fatigue: I feel stronger than I’ve ever felt before.

  20. No winter cold: this is the first year in +10 years that I haven’t had a cold.

  21. No more nosebleed: I used to get nosebleeds on a regular basis. It’s all gone now.

  22. Happier: I’ve never felt this happy in my life before. Now I get sudden bursts of euphoria from time to time. 🙂

  23. Better fine motor skills: playing the piano has never been this easy.

  24. No more red hands: my hands used to occasionally turn red. Not anymore.

  25. No more white fingers (Raynaud syndrome): I think this is due to quitting coffee.

  26. No cravings for food: I used to get cravings for e.g. ice cream and chocolate. Now I only feel hunger.

  27. No more pain between toes (Morton’s neuroma).

  28. Gaining weight: I’ve always been tall and skinny and has never been able to gain either muscle mass or body fat. Now I’m starting to gain weight as my body is absorbing the food I eat.

  29. Quick recovery after physical exercise. I play squash, do TRX, and ride racing bike and recovery has never been this quick. Hardly any muscle soreness.

  30. More stuff has happened that I cannot put into words: I just know that my body feels better and that something has healed that I don’t know what it is. I just feel that I have increased my life expectancy by many years.

All of this happened just because I stopped eating plants and dairy! Better yet, I haven’t paid a penny for it and haven’t been to an MD 🙂 The Internet has been my only resource.

That being said, the healing process was quite intense. I certainly got the keto flu and was many time questioning if I was doing the right thing. I want to thank everyone who has gone through this process and has shared their stories on the Internet. Without having access to all these personal stories I don’t think I would have continued all the way through. Heck, I wouldn’t have come across this diet to start with if it wasn’t for the Internet! This is why I want to share my experience with everyone.

What do all of these things have in common? No one would want to be even one of them, much less all of them. Up until recently, all of these things defined ME. This was my life, or lack thereof. My name is Jared Reagin. I’m 29 years old, a single father, and a man who has finally found success.

I have tried every diet you can think of, from vegan to paleo to the grapefruit diet. Nothing every worked. My health concerns and weight even increased. At the end of August in 2017, I saw an interview Dr Shawn Baker did with Rogue Health and Fitness that gave me hope. He was talking about a Zero Carb/Carnivore diet. It seemed simple enough and I set out to do it. I lasted two days.

Well, luck would have it that I had friends that were doing keto, which seemed to be low carb enough to maybe work. I started on September 8th, and hoped for the best. It was difficult, but I lost 11lbs my first week. When you see results like that, you start to get very determined. After my first month, I had lost 40lbs. My second month I moved to a Low Carb High Fat/Keto combined diet. On my birthday at the end of October, my doctor told me I no longer needed to take my diabetes medications. My diet was keeping my blood sugar manageable at 120.

My back pain hurt me less every day. After sustaining a pinched nerve, due to a wreck I was in at 16, my weight gain had done nothing but make my pain worse and damaged my back further over the years. Though I was improving with my diet, I was still in physical therapy as late as December 2017.

Two weeks after I started the carnivore diet at the beginning of December, my pain was miniscule. For the last two years, I had to use a cane to get around and couldn’t stand for longer than half an hour. Well, I quit physical therapy after those two weeks and have never looked back. I eat all meats, and sometimes eggs and cheese. I drink water when thirsty. I’m rarely hungry and food (and even water) tastes better than before.

After 1 month Keto, 2 months LCHF, and 3 months Carnivore, I can tell you that Carnivore is the best thing I’ve ever done. My health is so much better. As a matter of fact, do you remember the attributes that I started this testimonial with?

Here are my current updates:

After 6 months (last 3 months carnivore) I am 404lbs; a loss of 126lbs. I have no IBS, and only have pain from my pinched lumbar 3 nerve after 6-8hrs standing (working out and being active lessens pain). My BG is constantly between 95 and 105, and diabetes meds are no longer required. I have no more high blood pressure, between 118/72 and 126/78 consistently. I have only minor anxiety (it was bad enough to send me to the hospital twice), and no depression.

I still have no will to live. That makes me feel like I’m just willing to exist. Instead, I have a craving to live life to the fullest and a need to live the best life I can for my daughter. I will be the best man and dad I can be for her. I will make sure she is taught the truth about health and will make sure she never has to struggle with her weight like I have for 2/3 of my life.

My final thought? Eat meat, drink water, be healthy. It’s as simple as that.
